| Transformers - The Special | |
  The history of the Transformers - as toys, cartoons and comicsFor 23 years, the "Transformers" have been among us now. The shape-shifting robots from planet Cybertron started their success story as toys that were produced in cooperation between Japanese toymaker Takara and American toymaker Hasbro. For promotional purposes, a cartoon show and a comic book series by Marvel would also be created. In the following years, the "Transformers" would regularly reinvent themselves in the form of various follow-up lines. On this year's 4th of July, a live action feature film produced by Steven Spielberg ("E.T.") and directed by Michael Bay ("Pearl Harbor") will finally be released to theaters. In addition, the recent "Transformers: Cybertron" cartoon show will start airing on German TV this February. Hence, more than enough reason to examine the history of these shape-changing robots. This special is going to cover the history of the Transformers in their multiple incarnations as toys, cartoon shows and comic books. On occasion, emphasis will be put on the releases in Europe, particularly in Germany. This special will concurrently also be available in English in order to serve as a primary reference for English-speaking fans as well. This will be a premiere for Splashcomics. The first chapter puts emphasis on the origins of the Transformers toyline. In addition to a general overview on Japanese robot toys, it covers the story of how two moderately successful Japanese toylines would end up becoming one of the biggest pop-cultural phenomenons of the Eighties. |
